The United States is the country where 735 of these billionaires call home. The country has 11 more billionaires compared to last year. China is second with 539 billionaires while India has a total of 166 billionaires. One of the notable newcomers to the three-comma club is Rihanna who as of now has a fortune of $1.7 billion. She’s the first billionaire in Barbados. Other countries that have had their first billionaire this year are Bulgaria, Estonia, and Uruguay. Below is a list of 20 countries that have the most billionaires.
1. United States: 735 billionaires
The United States has more billionaires than any other country. The 735 billionaires in the country have a total net worth of $4.7 trillion. California is the state with the most billionaires, 186, followed by New York, with 135. Elon Musk is the wealthiest billionaire in the United States with a fortune of $219 billion. The Tesla founder is also the world’s richest person.
2. China: 539 billionaires
China has lost 87 billionaires over the last year. The country now has 109 fewer billionaires than the United States. Zhong Shanshan is the country’s richest billionaire. He’s the founder and chairman of the bottled water company Nongfu Spring and has a fortune of $65.7 billion. All the billionaires in China have a combined wealth of $1.96 trillion.
3. India: 166 billionaires
India has 26 more billionaires compared to last year. Mukesh Ambani is India’s wealthiest individual with a fortune equivalent to 12% of the total wealth of the 166 billionaires in the country. Other billionaires in the country include Cyrus Poonawalla, founder and owner of the world’s largest vaccine maker. He has a net worth of $24.3 billion.
4. Germany: 134 billionaires
Germany is home to 134 billionaires who have a combined net worth of $608 billion. The country has however lost 2 billionaires since 2021. Dieter Schwarz, son of the founder of Schwarz Gruppe, the world’s 4th largest retailer is the richest person in Germany with a net worth of $47.1 billion.
5. Russia: 83 billionaires
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has seen Russia lose 34 billionaires over the last year. Oleg Tinkov is one of the billionaires taking a beating from the western sanctions. The value of shares of his digital bank, Tinkoff, plunged 90% in London. Vladimir Lisin is the country’s richest individual with a net worth of $ 18.4 billion.
6. Hong Kong: 67 billionaires
There are 67 billionaires in Hong Kong who have a total net worth of $383 billion. However, four billionaires from the country have dropped off from the billionaires club. Robin Zeng, founder and chairman of Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) — one of the biggest suppliers of electric vehicle batteries in the world— is the country’s richest person with a net worth of $44.8 billion.
7. Canada: 64 billionaires
Canada is one of the countries with the most billionaires in the world. The country has the same number of billionaires it had in 2021. It has not lost any billionaires and neither has it had any new billionaires. All the billionaires in the country have a combined net worth of $308 billion.
8. Brazil: 62 billionaires
Brazil has three fewer billionaires this year compared to last year. Jorge Paulo Lemann is the country’s richest individual with a net worth of $15.4 billion. The 62 billionaires in the country have a combined net worth of $187 billion. Some other billionaires from Brazil include Eduardo Saverin who co-founded Facebook with Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard and has a net worth of $10.6 billion.
9. Italy: 52 billionaires
With 52 billionaires who have a combined net worth of $195 billion, Italy is one of the 20 countries with the most billionaires. Giovanni Ferrero is the country’s richest individual with a net worth of $36.2 billion. Nerio Alessandri, the founder, and president of Technogym, an Italian manufacturer of fitness and gym equipment is one of the other billionaires from the country.
10. Taiwan: 51 billionaires
Like Italy and India, Taiwan has had four new billionaires in the last year. The country’s billionaires have a total net worth of $151 billion. Zhang Congyuan who founded the shoe manufacturer Huali Industrial is Taiwan’s richest billionaire with a net worth of $11.7 billion.
11. United Kingdom: 49 billionaires
The United Kingdom is home to 49 billionaires. It had 56 billionaires last year. UK’s wealthiest person has a net worth of $16.3 billion. One of the youngest billionaires in the country is Nik Storonsky (37), the founder of Revolut, a UK-based financial services company. The founder and co-CEO of gambling company Bet365, Denise Coates who has a net worth of $5.3 billion is also one of the billionaires from the United Kingdom.
12. Australia: 46 billionaires
Although the country has lost two billionaires since last year, Australia is one of the countries with the most billionaires in the world. Melanie Perkins (34), the co-founder and CEO of Canva is the youngest and the richest individual in the country with a net worth of $6.5 billion.

13. Sweden: 45 billionaires
There are 45 billionaires in Sweden, four more than there were in 2021. Some of the new billionaires in the country include Jens Von Bahr — co-founder of Evolution AB, a supplier of gambling products — who has a net worth of $1.4 billion as well as Rutger Arnhult, who owns major stakes in real estate companies like Corem Property and Sagax.
14. France: 43 billionaires

Last year the country had 42 billionaires and has seen one billionaire join the three-comma club this year.

With 41 billionaires, Switzerland is one of the countries with the most billionaires in the world, according to Forbes. Last year the country had 40 billionaires. Guillaume Pousaz, the founder of checkout.com is the richest person in the country with a net worth of $23 billion.
16. South Korea: 41 billionaires
South Korea has 41 billionaires, two less than last year. Almost all these billionaires live in Seoul, making the city one of the 10 cities with the most billionaires in the world. Jay Y. Lee and Kim Beom-su are the wealthiest billionaires in the country with a net worth of $9.1 billion each.
17. Japan: 40 billionaires
Japan has lost 9 billionaires since 2021. Tadashi Yanai is the richest individual in Japan with a net worth of $26.1 billion. Other billionaires from Japan include Shigenobu Nagamori, the founder of automaker Nidec who has a net worth of $5.4 billion as well as the founder of SoftBank Group Masayoshi Son who has a fortune of $21.3 billion.
18. Indonesia: 30 billionaires
With 30 billionaires, Indonesia is one of the countries with the most billionaires in the world. The country had 21 billionaires last year and has lost nine billionaires this year. Tobacco and banking tycoon Robert Budi Hartono is the richest person in Indonesia with a net worth of $23.2 billion.
18. Israel: 30 billionaires
Israel and Indonesia both have 30 billionaires. The former has however lost fewer billionaires this year compared to the latter. Israel had 25 billionaires last year. Eyal Ofer, the chairman of Ofer Global which has interests in real estate, banking, shipping, and investments is the richest individual in Israel with a net worth of $15.4 billion.
20. Thailand: 28 billionaires
Thailand is home to 28 billionaires, three fewer than last year. Dhanin Chearavanont, chairman of Charoen Pokphand Group, one of the world’s largest producers of animal feed and livestock is the richest man in the country with a net worth of $13.5 billion.
