He dropped out of high school to pursue a career in music. So how did the rapper start and how does he make and spend his millions?

Early life and education

Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born on October 17, 1992, in St. Joseph, Missouri to Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr. and Deborah Rae who were members of the band named Daddy Warbucks. After his parents separated, Eminem lived with his mother in Detroit, Michigan. They lived with family members and barely stayed in one house for more than two years.

The rapper spent most of his youth in Detroit in a predominantly black neighborhood where he was bullied severally by black youths. He attended Lincoln High School in Michigan and after spending three years in ninth grade due to poor grades from his absenteeism from school, he dropped out at the age of 17.

Career Beginnings and early struggles

Marshall began rapping at the age of 14 while in high school. He and his friend Proof would sneak into a neighboring school for freestyle rap battles. They would also attend open mic competitions on weekends.

In 1988, when he was 18, Eminem formed his first music group with DJ Butter Fingers and released a demo tape. The following year, they joined Bassmint Productions and changed their name to Soul Intent in 1992 with other rappers like Proof joining the group. In 1996 Eminem formed a group called The Dirty Dozen (D12) with Proof and four other rappers. He was later signed to F.B.T. Productions and recorded his debut album, Infinite in 1996, which turned out to be a commercial failure.

At the same time, the rapper had just had a daughter called Hailie Jade Scott Mathers with his girlfriend Kim Scott. He cooked and washed dishes for minimum wage at a restaurant at St. Clair Shores and worked for 60 hours a week to support his family. In March 1997 he was fired from his restaurant job and lived in his mother’s mobile home with Kim and Hailie. At one time he attempted suicide due to the struggles he went through especially after the commercial failure of his first album and trying to raise his daughter with little money.

Dr. Dre was so impressed by Eminem’s rapping talent and began working with him despite his partners slamming him for signing a white rapper. Eminem released his second studio album, The Slim Shady LP in February 1999 which became certified triple platinum and was one of the most popular albums that year.

In May 2000 the rapper released his third studio album, The Marshall Mathers LP which sold 1.76 million copies in its first week breaking records held by Britney Spears’ …Baby One More Time and Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle for the fastest-selling hip-hop solo album by an American artist.
