Early life and education
Steph was born on March 14, 1988, in Akron, Ohio to former basketball player Dell Curry and Sonya, a teacher. He grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina where he would go to NBA games and practice to shoot with his father during warm-ups. Dell was a shooting guard for the Charlotte Hornets at the time.
Curry’s family temporarily moved to Toronto while his father played for the Toronto Raptors. While in Canada, young Steph played for the Queensway Christian College boys’ basketball team and led them to an undefeated season.
After his father retired from professional basketball in 2002, Curry and his family returned to Charlotte where he joined Charlotte Christian School and led his team to three conference titles and three state playoff appearances. Curry wanted to play college basketball for Virginia Tech but instead went to Davidson College.
The Golden Boy continued to shine after joining college. He finished his freshman season with a scoring average of 21.5 points per game. He was the scoring leader in the Southern Conference and the country’s second among freshmen after Kevin Durant. Steph also broke Keydren Clark’s freshman season record for three-pointers after scoring his 113th three-point field goal of the year on March 2, 2007. At the end of the season, he was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year. He was also selected for the USA team to appear at the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championships. He led Team USA to a silver medal.
In his sophomore year, Curry once again led the Southern Conference in scoring, averaging 25.5 points per game. Two days later he set the record for the most three-pointers in a single season with 159.
In his junior year, Steph scored a career-high 44 points on November 18, 2008. Davidson however lost to Oklahoma 82-78 that day.
